HDR & Gills Onions – ACEC California & ACEC Engineering Excellence Award Winner

Jun 25 2013 Published by under General Interest

ACEC California awarded HDR Engineering, Inc. its Golden State award for the Gills Onions Advanced Energy Recovery System Project in Oxnard, Calif. The awards banquet took place on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, in conjunction with their Legislative Visit Day, in Sacramento, CA. HDR went on to receive the American Council of Engineering Companies coveted Grand Conceptor Award for the Gills Onions Advanced Energy during the national Engineering Excellence Awards gala, also known as the Academy Awards of the engineering industry, that took place in Washington DC on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. This is the second year in a row that an engineering design project in California has received the councils top award at the Engineering Excellence Awards. Last years award was bestowed on Cambridge, Mass.-based CDM for its Groundwater Replenishment System designed for the Orange County Water and Sanitation Districts. HDR was selected by Gills Onions, the largest fresh-cut onion processor in the nation, as the lead engineering firm on this breakthrough .5 million facility that converts onion waste to power. In the facility, juice is extracted from onion peels and treated in a high-rate anaerobic reactor to produce methane-rich biogas. The biogas is then treated and used to power two fuel cells that provide electricity for the processing plant. As a result of this project, the owner has achieved increased energy independence, elimination of a waste stream, reduced operational cost, and a

Laser Treatments in Brisbane for Tattoo and Hair Removal

            Jun 25 2013 Published by under 1

Laser Hair Removal is becoming more and more popular as people seek ways to permanently remove unwanted or excess hair. Most people have tried the short term methods such as shaving, waxing or plucking, but are often unhappy with the side effects associated with them.

Laser Technology has come a long way and gets far superior results when compared to other methods of permanent hair reduction, such as IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. Laser also often requires far less treatments due to the effectiveness of the machines and the wavelength used which is specific to the melanin or brown pigment contained in the hair.

The wavelength of light used determines how deep the light or laser energy penetrates into the skin therefore affecting whatever structures lie in that particular layer. IPL or Intense Pulsed Light, as it is multiple wavelengths is better for treating skin conditions such as pigmentation, capillaries and sun damage which lie in a superficial zone within the skin. A hair removal laser (such as the Alexandrite) and its single or targeted wavelength effectively destroys the cells responsible for growing another hair which is located more deeply within the skin.

In a Laser Hair Removal treatment pulses of light are targeted at the area which delivers heat down into the base of the follicle where the root of the hair resides. This short burst of heat disables the hair follicle from growing another hair. As only a certain percentage of hairs are actively growing at any time, it takes several treatments to clear an area of hairs. Most areas of the face and body are suitable for Laser Hair Removal and for those people who suffer from ingrown hairs, they will also be treated with this technology.

A licensed Laser Hair Removal operator will have to have undertaken many hours of supervised training, theoretical studies and laser safety officer tests to attain that qualification. This will mean you get a safer treatment and ultimately better results as they will be more experienced in performing the treatments on many different skin and hair types. Making sure the clinic and laser operators have their licenses on display can also be very reassuring.

When undertaking Laser Hair Removal for the first time it can often be difficult to decide which clinic is going to suit your needs. Price is usually a good indicator of the technology they use as the true medical grade lasers will be a much bigger financial outlay. Cheap prices that seem too good to be true often leave the client with little or no results and in the long run they end up having many more treatments than they first thought they would need.

Look for a clinic that has been in business for a long period of time. Chances are if they are a long standing company they have proven their ability to keep their customers happy. By doing your research before starting permanent hair removal treatments you can be assured you will be getting a high quality, safe and effective treatment with great long lasting results.

BackStab leads iPad Games of the Week (Appolicious)

Appolicious – I’ve actually played a Pirates of the Caribbean movie tie-in game for my Xbox. It was bland, almost playable, and nothing to write home about. But with the launch of BackStab this week, we can all safely put that behind us and revel in what could have been. The game delivers a massively open world (think Assassin’s Creed and Red Dead Redemption) set in the pirate-filled 18th century, where you take on the role of Henry Blake as he sets off on a revenge spree to track down the man who betrayed him during his time in the Royal Navy. …
