Android surges in Q2, accounts for more than two-thirds of all smartphones shippedAndroid expanded its dominance of the global smartphone market last quarter and accounted for 68% of all smartphones shipped in Q2 2012, according to IDC. Samsung (005930) was the driving force behind the surge in Android shipments on the quarter, representing 44% of all Android smartphones shipped. iOS, which will likely get a significant boost next month when Apple (AAPL) launches its next-generation iPhone, came in a distant second on the quarter with a 17% share of the global market. All told, Android and iOS accounted for 85% of all smartphones shipped on the quarter, which IDC says is a record high for the combined share of the two operating systems.
