NSF Workshop on Engineering Education Evaluation Tools

Apr 12 2014 Published by under Interests

From a colleague visiting us here at Purdue this year:

            Engineering Education Colleagues,

Clearly, assessment and evaluation are vital to measuring and enhancing the success of our Engineering Education development projects. Many of us struggle to find the right evaluation tools for our course, curriculum, or laboratory improvement projects. As a research community, we do not want valuable evaluation tools going unused, nor can we afford wasting time on re-inventing the wheel. With National Science Foundation support, we are seeking individuals to participate with us in addressing this problem.

Washington State University is leading a project to identify, characterize, and disseminate information about evaluation tools suitable for Engineering Education development projects. We invite interested persons to apply to participate in reviewing and guiding the work of this project. A $500 stipend and modest travel reimbursement will be provided to individuals selected who participate in a half-day workshop and provide pre- and post-reviews of our work.

We are seeking a diverse group of twenty-five people who are users, developers, and/or critiques of Engineering Education project evaluation tools. Applicants may have interests in evaluation of course materials, curricula, pedagogical practices, recruitment or retention programs, or assessment measures for targeted outcomes. Interests may also span K-12 through undergraduate program levels. We seek a broad set of perspectives.

Individuals selected to participate will be expected to do the following:
Participate in a half-day workshop in Arlington, VA on the afternoon of Thursday, May 28, 2009 to review and develop consensus recommendations that shape the outcomes from this project
Complete a pre-workshop review of drafted materials and provide written feedback to the project team
Review a post-workshop report and provide follow-up materials to support the success of the project.

If you are interested in being a participant, please apply to Denny Davis, Co-Director, Engineering Education Research Center, PO Box 642714, 143 Dana Hall, Pullman, WA 99164-2714 or email: davis@wsu.edu. If you have questions, you may call Denny Davis (509-338-5107) or Michael Trevisan (509-335-9117) or Diane McGarry (509-335-6104). Your application should include:

            Name, title, affiliation
            Contact address, phone, and email
            Half-page statement of interest including
            (a) your experience with Engineering Education projects and evaluation and
            (b) your vision for making evaluation tools accessible.

Applications will be received through February 24, 2009. Invitees will be notified by March 3, 2009.

If you know of others who may be qualified and interested in this topic, please forward this message to them.

Thank you for your consideration of this opportunity to contribute to the Engineering Education research and innovation community.
