Controversial Genetic Engineering Breakthrough

Apr 12 2014

Nadia Bilbassy for MBC reports on a genetic engineering breakthrough. According to Dr. Shendure’s study for Washington University, a new type of genetic testing allows future parents to obtain the entire DNA structure of a fetus through a blood sample from the mother and a saliva sample from the father. This new type of testing could be practiced much earlier into the pregnancy period with less risk for the mother and fetus, and could allow for the diagnosis of many diseases. The report also shows, however, the controversies raised by such testing, particularly the risk for gender selection.
